The Company
Village Hall Players Incorporated (VHP) is a vibrant and dynamic amateur touring theatre company serving Kyogle and the surrounding districts of the Northern Rivers in New South Wales.
VHP’s vision is to take live theatre into rural villages, utilising village halls and encourage young and indigenous people to participate in theatre.
VHP produces up to four productions in a season, with at least one Australian play. We also offer a youth theatre program, DIRT (Drama In Rural Towns).
VHP is a community-run not for profit amateur company and is a sub-committee of the Kyogle & District Arts Council. VHP provides its productions free to many community organisations such as the Whiddon Group Kyogle Court’s “Night of Nights”, Fairymount Festival, Kyogle Seniors’ Week Concert, the Kyogle Combined Churches Community Christmas Pageant, the Kyogle Bazaar, the Kyogle Lions Club’s Carols by Candlelight and the Tidy Towns’ Farmers’ Markets.
First begun in 2010 as a play reading group by two ‘ageing thespians’, Lynette Zito and Gordon Hook, VHP now consists of members of all ages, from teens to octogenarians.
Our History
In October 2010, VHP’s first performance was two one-act plays for a private audience of 40. That small taste of once again ‘treading the boards’ led to the 2011 production of Grand Tour, written by Australian John Summons. The play was performed in Kyogle and Bonalbo as part of Kyogle Council’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.
The company then toured a season of two one-act plays at local halls in the district and a Christmas musical production and continues touring its productions each year.
The DIRT program, a concept of drama teacher Joelle Foy, (then) actor-in-residence Paul Worsnop and artistic director, Lynette Zito, began in July 2011. In June 2019, the DIRT program will celebrates its 8th birthday in Kyogle and it’s 4th birthday in Casino.
VHP has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, parents, and audience members alike.
